George 's Journal

Greetings!:

We are in need of  materials for research into the unique city of Brownsville and the Lower Rio Grande Valley. We are especially in need of the 1960 to 1969 Palmetto Yearbooks. We are looking into scanning all the yearbooks and making them available either as a set on DVDs or individual years on CDs. These books are getting harder to find and we would like to preserve these great yearbooks and make them available to those who would like them.

Many of us would like to see our hometown restored someday. Brownsville was a very prosperous, diverse, and progressive city in the 1930's to the 1970's. It was the center for cultural events, symphonic concerts, choir recitals, social events and athletic events of all types for the entire Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Brownsville has one of the oldest airports in the WORLD! It recently celebrated its 75 birthday. For 10 years or so, from 1931- 1941, it was the BUSIEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT in the world! Most movie stars like Bing Crosby and Bob Hope and many others and their large entourages came through Brownsville enroute to Rio, Caracas, Buenos Aires and Mexico City. Many stayed at the Hotel El Jardin. Brownsville also has a very busy seaport that was instrumental in many historic events over the past 150 years.

So look around and let me know if you have any old maps, phone books, photos, etc. Also, let's all encourage the folks in Brownsville to restore the historic landmarks and buildings. Once they are gone, they are gone forever.

I know I speak for many people when I say that many of our parents LOVED that little town and we owe it to them to help restore it.  We also owe it to our children and grandchildren, those who live in Brownsville and environs and those far away who will someday come to visit to seek their roots. Let us leave them a trail that is well marked and a city and area that we all can be proud of.

Thank you,
